ARMSTRONG, HERBIE
[Back Against The Wall (1983)]

ARMSTRONG, HERBIE

Armstrong started in North Irland Showband The TWILIGHTS and played also with
the MONARCHS including VAN MORRISON on sax.
A short time the two where also involved as members of showband the GOLDEN EAGLES,
before they went different ways VAN with THEM and HERBIE became a founding member
of the WHEELS fronted by former R&R singer BRIAN ROSSI and with a 2nd guitar player
in ROD DEMICK - this must be in late 1964.
The group was even wilder than THEM when playing live, signed by EMIs Columbia label
they recorded VAN MORRISONs Gloria for their first single in 1965, followed by a 2nd 45
release in 1966 with two original compositions BAD LITTLE WOMAN  (later a hit for US band
SHADOWS OF KNIGHT) backed by another great rough song ROAD BLOCK. After a 3rd
single KICKS with no success again, the group split in 1967.
After a stint with LORD SUTCH - DEMICK & ARMSTRONG worked as a Duo, releasing two
albums the first on the MAM label with harmony vocals Westcoast and Soul influenced and
a 2nd on the A&M label. After the split of the Duo ARMSTRONG met US songwriter
KENNY YOUNG , together with female singer NOOSHA they founded the successfull
group FOX in 1975- producing 4 LPs.
Young & Armstrong split from FOX to form own band called YELLOW DOG in 1977, after
two LPs on Virgin  (incl. a small hit single) they split again. Armstrong went to join his friends
VAN MORRISONs backing group - helped by some other members of the band and VAN
he released his first solo album and two singles in 1983.
