MONKS, The (US-D)
[Black Monk Time (1966)]

MONKS, The (US-D)

Release 2008
..formed in 1964 as The "5 Torquays"  (5 US- Army Soldiers  in Germany)
touring around (mainly in the south) Germany.
They recorded two songs in Heidelberg in a studio they found near the
ODEON Keller-  after a gig.
With their German manager they recorded a demo album, to show around
for a recording contract, which was very difficult because they sounded
very different to other bands of the day,  playing loud agressive Beat (pre-PUNK).
They had a special sound in using organ &  banjo and treading the guitar on
stage like  Hendrix some time later.
A young progressive label manager and producer from POLYDOR signed them.
They released one album (to my knowledge only 300 pressed) and 3 singles
before they called it a day and quit for the USA.
(The LP got re-issued in 1980 and we sold it at STACHUS MUSIC  very very
good as special new  release; not as oldie; no in the Punk- Wave- section. )
They were a big influence for bands like Can & Faust  too.
Unbelievable  stage presentation live (had a gig  in Bayreuth )
They appeared on German TV  Beat Club  & Beat Beat Beat.
In 1999 the MONKS reunited for their first ever US gig at The CAVESTOMP,
since this time touring constantly through the world again.
The MONKS are cult / kultig.
Sadly the original drummer died in 2004.
