His first professional job was a short stint in 1963 ,with the folk-group NEW CHRISTY MINSTRELS.
Here he met Roger McGuinn, with whom and together with Crosby & Hillman they formed the BYRDS in late 1964.
His composition EIGHT MILES HIGH became his best known song with the BYRDS before he left in spring of 1966.
His next project GENE CLARK & The GODSIN BROTHERS only left us one recommended album in 1967, before
CLARK founded a Duo with DOUG DILLARD of the bluegrass band The DILLARDS.
DILLARD & CLARK recorded two fantastic LPs between 1968 and 1969, which maybe the start of the genre COUNTRY-ROCK.
In 1971 CLARK released his first solo album: WHITE LIGHT...incl. many great own compositions, but without bigger success, the
follow up LP ROADMASTER (1972) had only a release in Europe.
A short forgettable BYRDS - Re-Union too place, before his next LP the masterpiece NO OTHER, saw the light of the day in 1974.
With the LP : THE TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY (1977) on RSO, an LP that missed the quality of his former compositions followed.
From the late 70s to early 80s he worked with McGUINN-HILLMAN-CLARK.
Only one solo LP with FIREBYRD (1984) came in the 80s and he did some sessions with CARLA OLSON and SID GRIFFIN , but lost
his fight against drugs and alcohol in 1991
