MIKE COTTON SOUND, The
[The Mike Cotton Sound (1964) + 15 Bonus]

MIKE COTTON SOUND, The

Released 2015
Cotton started in the late 50s under the band name : The MIKE COTTON JAZZMEN in the still growing english tradirional Jazz Scene.
Around 1961 the band became professional and recorded 1 EP and some singles - with SWING THAT HAMMER they reached the
Top 40 in Great Britain.
In 1964 they changed name to The Mike Cotton Sound and the music went more and more into jazz-soul R&B - not unlike bands as
CLIFF BENNET & The REBEL ROUSERS or GEORGIE FAME & His BLUE FLAMES  (dont forget ZOOT).
When recording the self penned I DON'T WANNA KNOW - Dave Rowberry changed from piano to organ sound to get more funky.
They got allowed to record a whole album, which was no commercial success and became a very very rare collector item, till to this
CD release only some songs saw the light of the day on compilations.
In 1965 JIM RODFORD (see: Unit 4+2 ; Argent , Kinks) replaced Stu Morrison on bass - they backed some US singer like :
Solomon Burke , Sonny Boy Williamson and english female singer Elkie Brooks  (Dada, Vinegar Joe) and toured as support act with
James Brown, Lee Dorsey, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder and so on.
In 1965-66 they had some club dates in Munich Germany , which let them to back DON ADAMS by recording his album for Liberty (UA).
LUCAS an US singer joined them at time when Rowberry left to join The ANIMALS - LUCAS recorded HARLEM SHUFFLE (on Polydor),
a 2nd single for PYE with STEP OUT OF LINE and a last 45 for MGM : WE GOT A THING GOING BABY .
Inbetween a new organ player PETER BARDENS (ex-CHEYNES, THEM , VILLAGE , pre-CAMEL) and DEREK GRIFFITHS (ex-Artwoods)
had joined. JIM RODFORD left to joined new group ARGENT in 1969, so they called it a day .
But around one year later they had a comeback as SATISFACTION a great progressive jazz-rock band but again only one LP saw a release.
Some of the members  backed the  KINKS  in the 70s as brass - section. Cotton became a much looked for session player.
